I can resonate with this deeply. I learned a lot about the shortcomings of eldercare and the healthcare system when I was going through it with my dad. Because of the language barrier and the cultural gap, It was especially difficult trying to find place for him. That was three years ago and I'm still trying to make sense of it. Eldercare in this country is woefully lacking and so very expensive. I worry a lot about this and the future as we all grow older as a country.

Thanks Jenna for sharing. I can only imagine what it was like going through that with your dad. “Woefully lacking” is a good descriptor of the state of eldercare. I worry about the future as well. But I find hope in seeing a growing openness to new ideas and approaches and hearing a deeper discussion about what caring for an individual’s health — and the health of a community — even means. I appreciate Soojin’s perspective and efforts. And I appreciate your newsletter about the midlife experience, sandwiched between generations with changing needs.

Thank you for reading, Jenna! Your dad is lucky to have you as an advocate, a role many immigrant children take early on for many minorities. With so much brokenness, it can be traumatic. Please take care 🙏.

Thanks Soojin. It was indeed traumatic to go through. It has made me resolved to not repeat it again if/when I'll have to do this again with my mom.

Thank you Rex for reading and openly sharing your experiences. I encourage you to check out Soojin's Medium blog and the patient stories on “I am Cheese,” based on the Swiss cheese safety analogy. Self-advocacy and being informed are examples of important patient safety layers — imperfect and not always possible so more is needed. Soojin has a lot of thoughtful content on both sites. You can also contact her about sharing a story if interested.

Thank you for reading, Rex. I appreciate you sharing your experience. PPI is overused in our country and Daphne can tell you as well how much people rely on this type of medication. Doctors don’t know how to respond oftentimes when questioned because they are not used to being questioned. 😅 Majority of doctors don’t mean harm. Our system does a poor job training these people. However, I know patients are the best teachers, if people will start listening more, which, again, the system does not allow the time. The time is the critical component in the formula of excellence in healthcare, often too short for healing ailments.
